Herbology
In early spring of Grade 12 in 1968 at Burnaby Central High School, the teacher of our Biology 12 Class, Mr. Gardiner took us on a plant exploration trip to Lighthouse Park in North Vancouver, two times. As a kid, i used to wander and roam in the local forests in all kinds of weather and in the snow. I loved the forest, its silence, its stillness and its mysteries. In Biology Class, Mr. Gardiner was entirely boring. The class was essentially a botany nomenclature class with all the strange language of Latin Botanical Nomenclature complete with words that neither could be pronounced properly and never spelled despite the collection of an excellent memory. We all thought it was a complete waste of our time, but it was a compulsory requirement to have to enter University.
During the trip to Lighthouse Park the big thing that happened for most if not all of us in the class and for me was, i became aware for the first time that “all” the plants there were good for something…..meaning medically. The whole forest including the little things. This woke me up to the fact that the names were actually important, so despite the long argument of the name of the plants, i memorized them and passed the course with a B+ (about 88%). I also endorsed Mr. Gardiner from then on and helped popularize him as a teacher……in turn he became a staunch proponent to take every new botanical classes of his on field trips and he did so for many, many years until he retired. In those days 1967-68, field trips were unheard of as far as i know and it could be his were the first field trips in the schools of British Columbia. Because they were such a success, he changed his clothes from his suit to those of a hiker and that’s how you saw him most of the time. I believe he lived a happy life.
Ever since, i have been a strong advocate that with learning……every class should have outside of the school training or going to local places in the real world to coincide and given reason for whatever the educational class was for…if possible. A lot could be said on this……
I would have studied Chiropractic Medicine if I had gone to University. That’s my thoughts as i reflected on my life. I had a sports tuition grant of $500 to go to UBC, basically to act as a wrestler for the UBC Wrestling Team. If the grant had been larger……..$1500 or $2000, i would have been more determined to get there. In those days sports grants especially for wrestling were never granted, the $500 grant awarded to me was the very first one in BC, probably in Canada that was awarded to a wrestler. Nowadays, it is quite common such scholarships are granted, and that’s good.
The reason i would have studied Chiropractic was because spinal and bone adjustment helped me when i had a neck injury incurred while attempting to learn Greco-Roman style of wrestling. The chiropractor made my neck pain go away in two different adjustments in treatments of less than five minutes each. I thought i would like to do the same for other people. As a wrestler, it fit in with my athletic program. Till today, i still have an interest in Chiropractic Treatment.
If becoming a Chiropractic Doctor, I realize that i would have studied and also became a Naturopathic Doctor, the particular reason being that Herbs were used as the primary resource for healing with the N.D. Plus, Naturopathic Medicine studied and utilized Nutrition at a deep level both for natural cures with foods and their vital force and minerals…..complemented with herbal study, the insightful naturopathic doctor could cure everything including cancers…and at minimal cost in respect to conventional medical methods. Cleansing of the organs, using herbs, nutrition, enemas, colonic therapy cleansing, heat lamps, colour therapy heat lamps, hydrotherapy, massage therapy, physiotherapy, exercise therapy, breathing exercises, sun therapy all made sense to me.
Going to school, university, is expensive…..I never had money to do that, therefore when the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy in Sutton, Ontario…..coordinated with the government to have a government loan made available…the first time loans were available to go to a massage school, I applied and went there. Classes were 8 hours a day, six days a week with at least 2-3 hours homework every evening plus early mid exams every two weeks, then mid term exams at six weeks and final exams at the end of the semester. The course was 12 months with a two week holiday.
The Curriculum included the same Full Pre-Medical Curriculum that every doctor is required at University to fulfill before receiving their degree……the difference being that the doctor in a university learns the Full Pre-Med over the concourse of 4 years whereas we did it in a single 1 year course. Needless to say it was grueling, overwhelming and totally exhausting……but got done and got done well because we were taught by the experts of Anatomy……and we had the top best last year graduating students from the Toronto School of Chiropractic who were very good and fresh with their knowledge.
The Dean (and Owner) of the school was a Registered Naturopathic Doctor besides her being respected as being the best massage therapist and massage instructor in Canada. She was Hungarian, about five foot two and had hands the size of a six foot man. In forty five minutes she could make your back feel like you were seventeen years old.
During that year, we also studied supplementary courses in the Nutrition of Dr. Don Donsbach, First Aid, CPR, and Foot Reflexology and Shiatsu Massage Therapy. Dr. Donsbach later developed a PHD Nutritional Program and was the first person and is perhaps the only person to ‘correctly’ describe vitamin and mineral therapy in the physiological sense. Probably today there is no nutritional course that compares to it, and if it does it probably is because the course was built on the course by Dr. Donsback. He lived in California.
After the course, I took a trip along the East Coast from Boston to Jacksonville, Florida then went to Edmonton to work for Dr. Dimitri Skaken. Dr. Skaken was 80 years old that year and in a wheelchair…..i would take him out for strolls in the fresh air,….it was then he would talk. Shortly after I left, he passed over a few months later. Dr. Skaken was the Founder of the Canadian Naturopathic Association…….this he did in 1935 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Prior to that he lived in Toronto for about five years (after living in Winnipeg), he re-located to Edmonton opening up Vienna Clinics where he was renowned world wide for curing the ‘incurable diseases’. Practicing the traditional way of the country doctor he would often drive to the homes in the country and treat the people in their home if they could not come to the city……sometimes he would be gone for days and frequently never returned home till 2 and 3 am then got up early and worked all day tending to his local clients, many of whom travelled long distances to see him…..many from United States and several each year from Europe.
Dr. Skaken told me to be careful of the modern vitamin and minerals supplements as the medical profession was putting pressure on the Naturopathic Association to use remedies that in his opinion were not koscher……would not work, would only partially help and many would even cause further problems and other ailments…..he recommended only Nature’s Way or Nature’s Path products from Dr. John Christoper…..and for Herbal Products to use his Herbal Powder for Liver Detoxification as well as herbs from a small company ” 3-Way Herbs”, from BC.
Oddly enough, it was his son, who also being a Naturopathic Doctor, practicing in Calgary, once becoming the President of the Canadian Naturopathic Association, began promoting vitamin and mineral supplements in 1985……and still does to this day.
I told Dr. Shaken that i was interested in studying more about Herbology and he recommended then gave me the money to go to Burnaby, BC and buy The Dominion Herbal College of Canada’s herbal course (3 volumes, a correspondence course), this was 1981 in September. I had a friend who allowed me to read these same course materials in 1974 so i was familiar with it, but now after studying the full pre-med at the massage therapy course, reading and studying the entire course i saw it with different eyes.
In essence, I was an expert in anatomy…..all parts of it as well as quite proficient in physiology. With the knowledge of pathology and being also a bit good at Symptamatology, it was easy to follow exactly what Dr. Herbert Nowell, the creator of the Dominion Herbal Course was saying. Nevertheless, i did not write the exam, i continued studying it for 7 years. When writing the exam i received the highest mark ever given to that point in time. The Dominion Herbal College was established in 1926 and written by Dr. Nowell after 40 years of practicing herbal medicine. I also received A++ in the Hand-In Correspondence Lessons prior to writing the exam.
It turned out many famous doctors were former students of the course. My mark was 96% and 2 more marks were questionable as to being correct but not given. I was quite pleased about that mark but to be honest wanted to get 100% to feel confident I knew the material very well. Immediately after the exam, I tutored a young woman passionate about herbs on how to study for her exam and very wonderfully she got 97%. Ha. Ha. Ha. We remained high on the scoreboard until about ten years later, I became an Instructor for the Dominion Herbal Collage……the essential requirements of which were to mark the correspondence lessons the present students were handing in. I took the opportunity to challenge them to increase their inspiration about their love of herbology……and gave them further supplementary lessons to delve into a deeper study of what was ‘in’ the textbooks. I enjoyed this for about a few years.
Some several years later, the former Dean and President of the College said a few years ago there was suddenly a whole host of students in their exams who got 100%….several of them and many others 97, 96% but hardly anyone had a mark lower than 92%…..and she couldn’t figure out how that happened. That was a happy chuckle for me.
Some of ‘my’ students at that time made such good lessons notes…..due to the use of the computer…..I requested they make me a copy and send them to me. I have these two copies still today and regard them as a special treasure.
The fact is the Dominion Herbal Course is so interesting such that one cannot help but imbibe the awareness and the feeling of the original country doctor. I would say…..all my students ‘got that country doctor feeling’ too. There is no other course in the world like it, but the other reality is, Dr. John Christopher, a former student of the Dominion Herbal College, wrote the now famous herbal textbook School of Natural Healing…..plus created the School of Natural Healing. And it is better! The information Dr. Christopher gave is better than the Dominion Herbal College. It does not give the same feeling as the country doctor…..but it does take the western herbal doctor into contemporary herbal doctoring by providing singular and multiple remedies for every known disease or ailment, plus very wisely describes every ailment, often to the cellular level. And additionally provides proven adjunctive therapies to cure most, if not every ailment.
The British Herbal Institute of Herbology is utilized in Great Britain and in Western Europe by Naturopathic Doctors there…….but it is in my opinion its nowhere’s near as comprehensive or as good as Dr. Christopher’s School of Natural Healing Textbook…..particularly the supplemental Formula Making Textbook to it i.e. The Desk Reference which not only gives you in detail all the formulas but also how to harvest, prepare and make the formula on your own plus administer and give it to someone else, e.g. a patient if you were a Doctor. It is worth its weight in gold and more. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of ‘Alternative/Complementary/Holistic/Wholistic’….Doctors and other medical professionals do use and prescribe Dr. Christopher’s Formulas. Then, there are The Herbalists.
I have never charged anyone of the couple thousand herbal consultations i felt were important to give to this or that person. Difficult cases required two or three weeks of study to come up with the correct formula……despite the fact i knew herbs quite well. The older i have gotten, the more i have found most people are completely hypnotized by the establishment medical system,,,,,,,and will not even properly try or give the herbs a positive chance to help them. I’ve tried this, they may say. Well, what do you know they question? It doesn’t matter what you say, and if in the end they do for some reason or other get to the herbs and get the benefit from them finally, then God Bless them. I have found most people will not do what you say anyway, at least what I say. Sometimes, I think i should be more like Dr. Shaken who in later years was also frustrated with his patients so that often when he met his client would take them into his office and yell at them for the first thirty minutes. Then when they were trembling and shaking, they would agree to obey him, he would tell them what to do in five or ten minutes.
The reality is that conventional western medicine has a 34% success rate in helping or curing a person, in contrast to Traditional Chinese Medicine which has a 92% % cure rate. Western diagnosis is accurate only to 15%….and you can almost say it is luck that the 34% success rate is reached.
Why would Traditional Chinese Medicine have an amazing 92% cure rate, not helping, but curing rate? That is almost 100%……which means if you went to a Chinese Hospital you would most likely get cured…..the other 8% does not mean you die, however even traditional chinese medicine cannot help you if your condition is so far gone that you are going to die, or that it is your karma to do so. The traditional chinese medicine has seven pulses that bring awareness of impending death,….does every traditional chinese practitioner know how to diagnose for these seven pulses? Some do!
In a test for finding solutions for cancer, the AMA (American Medical Association) invited 20 Traditional Chinese Doctors to come to Texas and treat 200 patients who had varying degrees of cancer. Most of the patients had cancers that were considered incurable. All but 3 lived and were completely cured within a few months, those 3 were too far gone to be helped. In the end, the AMA discounted the Chinese Doctors in being able to cure cancer because not one of them would give a magic pill to do it. The AMA, it seems would rather let their patients die if they haven’t got a magic pill than have their doctors go and study Traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine treats the patients entire body plus the ailment at the same time…..this is why they are successful.
Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine is made on the energy of the body…..the Chi….as it is existing in the Acupuncture Meridians….the determination of the energy of the organs is done through the pulse at the wrist…….there are 12 pulses. Plus they see your tongue and know what it means if the tongue is not perfect. They see the status of your complexion and can often tell right away what is wrong with you…..and listen to the tone in your voice along with the manner in which you speak and carry your body….then they ask you some general questions then specific questions dependent on how you answer the question. The Herbal Remedy is then made, prepared for you. Acupuncture and or Acupressure or Massage may then be applied if the condition warrants it. Sometimes diet recommendations and exercise suggestions are given. Ongoing treatment, if advised, should be followed as it depends on how quickly a person responds to first treatments. Usually 7 days of treatment is advised……if the condition is difficult it may be advised to continue treatments every single day for 2 or 3 weeks more. That is for persons who respond to healing quickly. If a person responds to healing slowly it may take 2-4 months, or even longer. Visits to the Traditional Chinese Doctor are usually 45 minutes. They have cures for every known ailment known to man.

The Fifth Element
How can you diagnose a condition if you have not been taught how to do diagnosis properly? Ancient western diagnosis included the Four Humours with the Greeks as part of their diagnostic procedures. These were mentioned and forwarded by Aristotle. Even these four humours are not now used for hundreds of years, therefore better western diagnosis in essence has been lost for a long, long time. Aristotle, in my opinion thwarted the very rudiment of diagnosis by promoting only the Four Humours as prior and during his time were the Elements….Earth, Water, Fire, and Air and the Ether (also termed Space, or Sky, or Akash–as is known in India); Aristotle continued with just Earth, Water, Fire and Air then had them transposed to the Four Humours……which were the correspondent states of mind accompanied by the four elements and did not describe the health of the organs to any important or vital degree as is done in the Ancient Chinese Tradition.
This grave mistake by Aristotle, the author of three hundred books, I say, has caused untold misery and unnecessary death right to the present time; I believe it was purposefully done as even then as now as we know the elite do everything they can to control the population masses so they never lose control over them. Distorting knowledge is one way to do this. Medicinal knowledge is no exception and we have seen the problems right through the centuries, particularly in recent modern times with Louis Pasteur with the pasteurization of milk……which destroys all the beneficial bacteria necessary for the health of the stomach as well as the small intestines and the large intestinal colon. The Enderline Scientists from Sweden at that time of that day and till today denounced Pasteur but they did not have such an egotistical, ambitious person in their group to politically quell Pasteur, thus we have pasteurized milk in the western world to today……along with business interest, like Dairyland, who in fact became the main adviser in drawing up the Canadian Dietary Requirement. Really absurd, actually. A bane and a shame in Canada.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Fifth Element is referred to not as the Ether but as Metal. It amounts to the same thing as the meaning of metal is that when metal is hit it makes a sound….like a chime or bell or cymbal. The Sound then is the important thing. It is relative to the Lung Organ….the sound of the breathing, and diagnosis is how is the lung and its three burning spaces doing?
In India, the Akash or Ether is specific noted as Sound……as the Sound that travels through Space, through the Sky and is understood as being present in everything, everywhere. It is also called the Celestial Music or the Voice of God and in the ancient mysteries we have the Biblical statement in Genesis: In the beginning was the Word, the Word was created by God, and the Word .was God. The term “Word” is the same meaning applied to the Sound, the Music of the Spheres. In the human body it is regarded as the space in between every tissue and every cell and the space within each cell between the cell components. Today we can also say it is the space between the chromosomes of the genes and the RNA cellular space between its nucleus and its counterparts.
The Five Elements then belong very well with Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as Tibetan Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine……each of which have high success cure rates for every ailment. The Sicilian, Pythagoras, an initiate to the Ancient Egyptian Mystics Saints, was also a medical practitioner and was very successful healing thousands of people. He used the knowledge of the Five Element Theory also as it was always taught alongside the Teachings of the Saints. It was Aristotle, who not being an initiate to the Ancient Mystics, but rather to the Free Masons that did not continue to know about or have appreciation of…..or study the Five Element Theory. Thus, the bane of modern western medicine.
I have an unpublished book titled: Remarkable Cures by a Patient of Dr. Liang, Traditional Chinese Doctor. It indicates several stories of the different cures that Dr. Liang cured or helped me with…vertigo caused by a head on car collision, residue pain from frozen shoulder, arthritis, muscle pain, circulation problems, and some other ailments…..however, the main thing i profess there is The Fifth Element in The Five Element Theory as being the reason for the success of the ancient chinese medicine.
The wonderful book: The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine….medical knowledge collected over a twenty year period by Ilza Veith……then was translated and put together with an introduction by her. Ilza Veith was the wife of a German Ambassador who had his station in China…..they lived there. …….in chinese it is also called: The Nei Ching…..it is the most highly regarded book about Traditional Chinese Medicine amongst westerners but very, very highly regarded as well amongst the Chinese medical students themselves. It is supposedly true exerts of conversations by The Emperor and his chief medical minister…….detailing so many secrets of internal medicine, it is completely astonishing to read. Chinese medical students get very excited, very inspired by reading it and probably every Traditional Chinese Doctor uses it in his personal practice.
The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine was written about 4500 years ago. I have had the privilege of reading it about eight times……it is as ‘fresh’ today as it was as if first written 4500 years ago. For a medical student you do not just read the pages, you become mesmerized and study it…..over and over and over. It is all about Nature and how some of the mysterious things interact with the human body, the human being.
There is a tale that the Yellow Emperor was found as a baby floating on a river at an auspicious time and was raised in the village of this river. It later became to be called The River Chi. The Yellow Emperor was regarded by many as a Saint. His name was Huang Tu. It is noted when seeing someone, he saw all their Meridians ( the acupuncture meridian-energy lines) within them and it is he who drew them out and founded Acupuncture and the study of it in China… The great Nei Ching is a specific collection selected from hundreds and hundreds of ancient medical acupuncture manuscripts. Today, it is out of print, but you can get it on the internet.
Similarly in India, the ancient Rishis…used to leave their physical body and go into the Astral World…..and make details when returning to their body about what they saw about the body…..thus was born the ancient India acupuncture-meridians and nadis. Nadis are minor energy circuits within the body….comprising some 72,000 nadis and are said to converge in the heart. Acupuncture is the secondary basis of Internal Medicine…..after the study of the Elements aka….the Five Element Theory is the first, primary basis.
Medical Astrology…..
Once, I read a book by Hippocrates, 1974, in it he stated that without the study of Astrology, a doctor should not practice medicine. Medicine in those days was the study of herbs. Therefore, i studied Astrology. It takes three years of rudimentary and insightful study to get the basic understanding of Astrology……astrology as is presented today in the West.
After 20 years of study, my sense is that for clarity, it is better to forget most western astrology and study India’s Jyoti-Astrology, or go in depth to Chinese or Tibetan Astrology. Western Astrology as regards Predictive Astrology is at best an “intuitive guess”.
The best in western astrology is the same astrology as was used by Nostradamus. A rare book was found by a Mr. Dobereiner (in 1949)…..being a horse racing gambler/fan, he was looking for a way to increase his earnings on the race track when by chance he stumbled upon a book on Astrology written by a Mr. Galen. When Mr. Dobereiner was able to consistently predict “accident” at a certain roadway intersection based on the astrology charts drawn up for that intersection, he began teaching The Munich Rhythm Theory.
Mr. Galen, through old manuscripts in Southern France, had found an old copy of Nostradamus’ directions on how to do astrology and studied it. He became well known as a successful astrologer, but consequently was kidnapped by Hitler and forced to erect and interpret war charts for the German Nazis. When the Nazis had no further use of him, he was executed. Prior to his kidnapping, he had written and sold the book…..the Nazis had gone on a search for the book and apparently held all or rather almost all copies of the book excepting the copy which Mr. Dobereiner had found….it was also a rare copy and he found it in 1949. Mr. Dobereiner, became fascinated with what he read and began teaching seven years later calling this astrology The Munich Rhythm Method.
I was introduced to it by a fellow aspiring astrologer who knew German. The Munich Rhythm Method had recently been translated into English therefore I gladly accepted the three volumes as an important gift…….then studied them with this same friend for several years (on and off). These books came to me after studying contemporary western astrology for about ten years, however the real predictive astrology i would say exists with the Astrologer’s of India, or Tibet or China.
The study of Astrology in India is regarded as one of the highest cultural studies….. because it is considered as the study of Natural Law and includes the understanding of the Karma from one lifetime to the next…..then giving specific advise to be applied at certain times and days and years….or give the person a certain thing to offset a certain karma impeding their awareness…….or a certain herbal medicine to correct a specific condition. So,….it is a high, high study of many things and considered to have a special place in Indian Culture. The Great, Great Saint, Saint Kirpal Singh of Delhi has been quoted when asked about astrology, that …..“It is a Divine Science…..but there are few who can do it.” An interesting story shared to me by a devotee of The Beautiful Glory of Rajasthan….The Holy Saint, Ajaib Singh…..is ‘a westerner walking along the streets of India, became curious as to the unusual sign on a door, so he knocked on it to inquire what it meant. The door opened and he was given an old piece of paper before he could speak. Opening the paper, he was puzzled as to what was on the paper. He was taken to a seat beside a kindly looking gentleman who explained to him this is his astrology chart written for him at the time he would come to the door. The kind gentleman, nodded smilingly. The westerner was astounded to find along with the chart, a note saying the date of the chart was erected some 220 prior to his entering the door. The astrologers had kept all such future astrological charts for the building, which still remained in existance…..and were anticipating the date of which the westerner arrived to knock on the door.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, in its Five Element Theory….in The Table of Correspondences…..each Organ of the body is correspondent to a particular Planet in the sky……thus astrological knowledge is also important not just in Old Bhagdad of Iraq and Old Persia or Iran, but also in Old Egypt and Old China, Japan and Korea.
I do not understand or know about Unami Medicine, the medicine of The Middle East, i know all through the Muslim countries they have very good remedies, particularly Indonesia won many international awards for having the best herbal remedies, considered as being the most effective as regards South East Asia. Although i have not been to The Middle East, i have seen photos of shops where for very cheap price you can get the correct remedy for any ailment. I once read the Book of Vicienne who it is said is responsible for rejuvenating the interest of herbology in Western Europe due to his indefatigable ability by memory to recount everything known about virtually every herb. Astonishing both pauper and king alike he gave his knowledge and herbal remedies freely everywhere he was invited to speak. Traveling for twenty such years, he was from The Middle East, Syria, i believe.
In my humble opinion, due to the astounding collaboration of hundreds of groups of Chinese Medical Doctors collaborating, meeting, and sharing with their individual new findings every twenty years……..for over 250 of our recent years…..they have progressed in collecting the medical detail more than any other medical system known to mankind,……. thus the very good Chinese Doctor can give the herb for a single acupuncture point of the three hundred and sixty acupuncture points the human body is said to have.
India might have been comparable, however, due to the conquering by the Moguls for 400 years where-in the Moguls destroyed practically all of the Ayurvedic Medical knowledge information….till the Great Gurus, Guru Teg Bahadar and then his successor, Guru Gobind Singh…..destroyed them. India, it seems has fallen behind China in its modern medical proficiency, consequently even many well to do Indians will fly to China to get their medical treatment. Having said that, for the last 180-200 years Indians have been working very very hard to piece back together the remnants of the texts and its lost medical treasures back from the days of The Vedas which during the Third Century AD were acknowledged to be the highest form of medicine in the world at that time. For the last 200 years the natural medicine great efforts have been made in restoring the ancient knowledge of The Ayurvedic Medicine. Particularly in the recent twenty years, it is said they have all but completed it, however, due to the onset of western medical influence in India, it is not always easy to find the astute Ayurvedic Doctor. There are becoming more and more in the very recent ten years or so.
In China, many millions of Traditional Chinese Doctors are extremely proficient and it is practiced in virtually every Chinese, Korean and Japanese Hospital as the primary option as the preferred type of medicine……an option almost everybody prefers over Western Pharmaceutical Medicine….. however, even as we speak, we see more and more enforcement to engage in western medicine even there in China and more and more bribery to promote the pharmaceutical allopathic pharmaceutical business there. Nevertheless, Traditional Chinese Medicine is still flourishing very very strong and the best international medical spinal research and surgery is said to exist in China at levels far beyond any other country…..spinal research and surgery done without anesthesia, just anesthesia provided by acupuncture needle at certain acupuncture points and proven to provide the best surgical spinal results. It is reminiscent that as early as 200 BC, the Chinese were doing at that time open heart transplant surgery successfully, and the Tibetans were doing brain surgery during the 8th Century.
Interestingly, in Tibet, the medical monks when tested had to have had memorized over eight hundred medical texts…..and were required to quote the page of the text along with the answer. The Tibetans, as we know, were also very excellent with their Tibetan Astrology while many of the monks wrote the manuscripts to most, if not all the different aspects of the mind with the questions it does have. It is a question where those great manuscripts are today.
A note about astrology. The freshest astrological text i have read from India is Chandra Di Mantri’s published booklet: The 360 Degrees of the Zodiac. Like the Nei Ching (The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine), it is fresh today as it was thousands of years ago. This was one remnant that survived the holocaust of the destruction of the Vedic Texts by the invasion of the Moguls, again said to be over 5000 years old. In the study of Astrology, a student eventually comes to the question… well, what does this or that degree “mean”…..or does it ‘have a meaning?’ is the real question? Chandra Di Mantris booklet solves this question. If one knows the degrees of the planets in his or her astrological birth chart…..then reads the same degrees from this booklet, it is like somebody from high heaven telling you who you are……things if you put together, no one else will know, or could know except you…..and God. If you ever find that booklet, i suggest you get your chart done, or get an ephemeris and see what the planets were the day you were born. You will probably need help determining the exact degree on your ascendant…..a very important degree as it confirms to you key points or things as to what is your present life spiritual goal. A good astrologer would be able to help you, many are on the Internet. One of my favourite astrologers is Tom Lescher, known as Kaypacha. He lives in Costa Rica and if you subscribe to his website, you will have the best weekly astrological forecasts….in the western world, in my opinion anyway. Its called “Astrology for the Soul”, really a great weekly insight. You can google it as: The Pele Report also. Here is his YouTube website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZu9n5b7zFc
Since the mid 1990’s, after doing thousands of Charts….Consultations, I had decided to discontinue doing Astrological Consultations/Astrological Medical Consultations due to the depth to which i felt i needed to go into the chart…..the information was simply not available in the western astrological study courses or books I was able to find. and i still think i do not have the time to do the required 7-10 to 15 more years of study to become proficient with it.
Ayurvedic Medicine – What To Eat?
For thousands and thousands of years……Yogis and Rishis of ancient times….. adept at leaving their physical bodies used to go into the Astral Plane and from there witness the effects of foods and herbs going on in the physical body of themselves and their patients…..then returning to their own physical body, write of their findings…..thus Ayurvedic Medicinal knowledge was compiled.
Without going into details of what the elements are and how they work together…… in the Five Element Theory……they tell us that the physical constitution of the human body is made of the five elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Ether (Space)…….in Ayurvedic Medicine, the constitution of the body is determined through certain questionnaires ( it depends on which set of questions you use….some, are considered better questionnaires than others) it can be easily determined as to what 2 main elements are attributed to a certain person. Of course each person has all five elements within them, however, there is a certain pre-disposition for everyone to come into three main categories which depict the 2 main elements a person has as the dominant elements within them.
These are Ether (Space) and Air……when these two elements are the predominate elements in a person the term given is they have a Vatta Constitution. If the person has a predominance of Air and Fire…..the term given is they have a Pitta Constitution. If a person has a predominance of Water and Earth…..the term given is they have a Kapha Constitution.
In the western world we see these three constitutions termed the Ectomorphic, Mesomorphic, and Endomorphic constitutions……aka the thin or skinny constitution, the muscular constitution and the predisposition to be chubby constitution. Western medicine through the creation of incorrect psychology attributes certain psychological profiles for each of these so called constitutions. Again, western terminology loses its very significance and hides rather than reveals the secrets of nature by using terms such as ecto, meso and endo morphic. Terrible usage of language in my opinion…..as is most all western medical anatomical nomenclature actually.
The three main types of Ayurvedic Constitution (this applies almost exactly to Tibetan Medicine as well)……..if gone further looking into it, it has its medical body- constitutional science divided into 8 Dominant-Sub-Dominant Types of Constitution, not just three types of constitution…..and then, real in-depth diagnosis can be diligently made.
What To Eat….
For simplicities sake, Ayurvedic Medicine has aligned the correct foods to eat and those food not to eat pertinent to each of the Three Main Body Constitution Types: the Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha. If a person eats or drinks something that is not correct for their Constitution, the result will always be the formation of Ama…..a poison in the body…..this poison becomes toxic to the person and is always the cause of their sickness. Accidental injury is of course not included here.
This ancient question…….and modern question…….of what to eat is answered the best by knowing what Ayurvedic Medicine recommends as the best food, drink and even herbal substances (herbs to some degree anyway)…..for the person’s unique constitution. Everybody has a constitution that falls into this predisposition of the Five Element Theory. For years and years, while studying Nutrition, i asked along with others the question….”well, what should “”I”” eat?????
Therefore, labouring on the computer made a Booklet first with a really good quite well known Ayurvedic Questionnaire that anyone can answer in 20-30 minutes to determine their Ayurvedic Constitution. Then systematically made the lists of recommended foods and things to buy for each of the Constitutions…..and also What Not To Buy. The purpose was to make some kind of list available to take to the grocery store or farm markets and look at the list while shopping…. gradually each person would know by heart which foods that are specifically good foods for Them!
In western nutrition circles, there is the general recommendation to use ‘Your Intuition’ and gradually, systematically study which foods are good for you and which are not. A person is really at the ground level here usually with an ailment of some sort or another…..usually with poor or very poor food combination eating…….and it may take years to attune the intuition and make correct deliberations given the choice of all the variety of foods out there to eat.
Similarly in Ayurvedic Medicine, the same recommendation is given to use the Intuition in the same way, the great difference of course being that Ayurvedic Medicine gives the person a great, great head start to correct the diet…..and not get Ama (poison or toxicity) in oneself. In the sub-dominant constitution categorization, each person does have a third element and therefore it is important to have a certain portion of those foods appropriate to the third sub-dominant element that makes up their constitution……this is really where the Intuition comes into play.
I had the great fortune to attend a practical Ayurvedic Workshop by Dr. Vasant Lad in 1985….he was and i still believe is the Co-Founder and Professor of Ayurvedic Medicine at the University of Poona in India. As is usual by a proficient Ayurvedic Doctor, he takes the Pulse at the wrist similar like the Chinese Doctors do…….and through the Pulse the way Ayurvedic Medicine does its diagnosis, he first determines the person’s Constitution. His diagnosis for me included a sub-dominance of a third and sub-dominance relative to my dominant type of constitution, the percentage of which he gave as being 4%……therefore, I need to pay attention by my intuition to the dietary recommendations equivalent to about 4%.
Through various other Ayurvedic Questionnaires, i have found his diagnostic assessment of my constitution as being pretty well exactly right on. It is better, but not vital to have an Ayurvedic Doctor do the diagnosis of your Constitution for you as the Questionnaires are utilized ubiquitously and a person can confidently attend to their own dietary needs through them once knowing what one’s own body constitution is.
At one point, following the diet of a great ayurvedic book……a friend and I shared the cost for a woman to cook two weeks of food……according to the meals recommended in the book……I swear, I have never eaten so well in my entire life…..felt calm, had tremendous energy and a feeling of contentedness and excellent well being. The name of the the book is: Ayurvedic Diet by Andrea Morningstar and Mrs. Desai. Andrea Morningstar is a popular western nutrition author and Mrs. Desai is the wife of the well known Gurudev Amrit Desai of Massachusetts, formerly from the Pennsylvania Hills……from the Kripalu Yoga Ashram where Amrit taught Hatha Yoga and about Ayurvedic Medicine for over 40 years. Amrit was awarded the honour of being India’s Supreme Hatha Yoga Teacher some many years ago…..and several times, a prestigious honour with over 300,000 participants to vote for. Amrit Desai was and is a Yogi able to leave his physical body at will during meditation and go wherever he wishes in the Astral Plane. There are few in the world today able to do such a thing. You can get the book on Amazon and do the questionairre in about forty-five minutes, but remember you must answer “all” the questions, then make the percentage.
Five Flavours Food
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the rudimentary diagnosis is to include if possible the determination of whether the person has a hot or cold constitution. Of course, people will have a constitution which is both somewhat hot and somewhat cold……so there really is three constitutions with the chinese medical teachings. If a person has a hot constitution they are always warm….or almost always; a person with a hot constitution may be warm but easily get feeling cold and can also have problem getting warm again. The hot constitution often gets cold hands and cold feet and cannot bear the cold and bitter weathers very well or quite well. The cold constitution does the opposite and can bear the cold weathers and still may not get cold hands and cold feet yet still feels warm inside…if they feel hot inside or if they are in constant hot weather, it usually upsets them. Once the determination of the constitution is known whether the person is hot or cold….an entire regime of herbs and foods and even a method of treatment are recommended.
Mr. Henry Lu, perhaps more than any other Traditional Medical Doctor…..or medical doctor i would say…….has done an in-depth study for over forty years into the type of energy “Foods” have. Can you imagine that? The Types of Energy…….that Foods have!….have inherent in them. Well, take a carrot…..we know that it is cooling, and we know that celery is neutral more than anything else…..whereas pepper whether black or red pepper is hot, is pungent.
Classifying foods then is what The Five Flavours is all about. In fact, indeed it is an ancient part of The Five Element Theory…….many correspondences will be found in the Tibetan and Ayurvedic Medical Teachings as well. I read Mr. Lu’s Acupuncture Volume’s 1, 11, 111 in 1974. I stumbled upon them in Chinatown…..practically memorizing them, I went looking for him as they were published in Vancouver, but it turned out he had returned to China for further studying.
Many years later, he founded and still operates The International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, located near Granville Street and Broadway Ave, next to the Chapter’s Bookstore. Still, he may not be there as he is the invested guest speaker all around the world, particularly in China and Japan and has been honoured with the highest honours all over Asia. One of his classic works is Chinese Natural Cures……in there you can find his allocations of many hundreds of foods in The Five Flavours.
The very interesting thing about The Five Flavours is that when eating particular foods aligned with a person’s Ayurvedic Constitution…..is that we are again brought back to The Five Element Theory. The reality is this is all basic nutritional study……but far beyond the willy nilly propagandized vitamin-supplement industry and western dietetics……for instance, we have The Dairyland Corporation who for probably 70 years have drawn up as to what dietary recommendations are for the Canadian Healthy Diet…..and what its various foods should be and the amounts…for everybody. The thing of it is, if someone adhered to such recommendations they would be unhealthy and sick…..and only bring profits for the Dairyland Corporation. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happens. This is a big problem, because that is exactly what is happening. And then we have the Codex Alimentarius which is now in power over the Canadian Government….with the aim in mind to restrict RDA (Recommended Daily Amounts) to being less healthy yet, in addition to being the world regulator as to the amounts in existing natural food and herbal remedies such that minor amounts will only be prescribed and given by their medical doctor cohorts, which no matter how much used as medicine, will never cure any ailment.
Conversely, if the Canadian Health Agencies’ foods requirements were based on The Five Flavours and The Five Element Theory everyone would have a chance to have true, robust health. If accompanied by pure water and true Organic Food, that is. The Five Flavours are Sour, Bitter, Sweet, Pungent and Salty. The Five Energies of Foods are Cold, Cool, Neutral, Warm, Hot. The Five Movements of Foods are Upwards, Downwards, Neutral, Inside, Outside.
Finally, and lastly, but actually first is The Law of Karma as is with The Five Element Theory. When we read into what the Saints have said and taught……all through the centuries, and apparently since the beginning of time….we come to realize the details of the facts of the Laws of Karma and as how they apply as regards to the Elements. We live in a world, in a planet in the physical cosmos….and it is here we each create our Karma. Like it or not, whatever we do ends up in the net of karma…the creation of karma and we cannot escape it……we will suffer karmic consequences either is this lifetime or a next or other lifetime until we each learn not to. Saints, it is said, never impose their will on anyone…..however, they do advise what is better. They have a different viewpoint because they see from the top of the Cosmos……not from below where we are…..they do see and say what the consequences are…in brief form.
The Law of Karma and The Five Element Theory
All “things” have five elements within them, however each division of the different species have their own “pre-dominant” elements. The philosophy is that as humans we must eat something else we would starve to death. We cannot survive on the element earth alone…..dirt, soils, rocks, mountains. Saints advise us to become Vegetarian…….meaning Lacto-Vegetarian as this brings us the less amount of karma. Lacto-vegetarian means milk, cheese, butter, yogurt from the cow and goat….and vegetables and fruits, nuts, grains, leaves, herbs…..those foods and herbs of The Plant Kingdom. The Plants are made of two elements: the earth (minerals) and water…..mostly.
If we eat of the insects, snakes, and birds…..we incur more karma. The Reptilian, and Invertebrate Kingdom are made of three elements: the earth (minerals), water and fire elements and in the case of fowl or birds, they are pre-dominantly made up of the air, fire and earth elements, three elements also.
If we eat of the Animal …..those born in the Mammalian Kingdom……This includes all types of animals in the creation from the cat and dog to the tiger to the cow, the horse, the elephant. The Animal Kingdom is made up of four elements: the earth (minerals), water, fire, and air…..then we incur more karma yet.
It is only the human being……that is made up of the entire Five Elements….with the Ether Element being the primary distinction. Saints tells us that in the Ether Element is the quality of Discrimination…….while the Ether element is within all other species and all forms of life, it is only ‘manifested’ most in the human and the Gods and Goddesses in the higher Astral Planes……the exception is inclusive with the Whales and Dolphins…..all be it the quality of discrimination is not as paramount as in the Human. If we eat therefore, the whales and dolphins we incur a further, more karma even more than the eating of animals.
Here is an old Herbal Charter. A rare copy of which i found and then re-typed it on the computer with a different font. The original was in Old English Font and just to difficult to read, unless you knew how to interpret the letter and how it has changed e.g. s back then was written as an f.
